Chapter Eight

“I think it’s time to go back. Let’s go find the other two.”

Kay didn’t know what happened, but Dan suddenly turned away from her and began moving down the beach at a rapid rate.

“I don’t think Shelby wants me to check on her,” Kay called after him. She sped up to join him. What had gotten into him? “Dan, why are we running?”

“I…I think it might rain. You know, when you get old you can feel it in your joints.”

Kay frowned, but she didn’t offer any more protests. It wasn’t easy to stay even with Dan, but he took her hand in his and tugged her along.

They passed the luau area and continued, only pausing to look closely at several couples along the way. They almost passed by a couple tightly wound in each other’s embrace, kissing.

Dan came to an abrupt halt. “Pete!”

When there was no response, he stepped closer and called again.

Pete raised his head slowly and looked at Dan. Then, as if the sight of him had released him from the trance he was in, he jumped away from Shelby. “Dan! What are you doing here?”

“It’s time to go. Come on.”

Pete came closer, but he’d taken Shelby by her hand and brought her with him. “What’s wrong, Dan?”

“Nothing. It’s time to go home.”

Shelby looked at Kay, who shrugged her shoulders.

“Is there a problem, Dan?” Shelby asked.

“Yeah. I have to go home to get ready for tomorrow. Pete, I need you to come with me.”

“Uh, yeah, sure, Dan. I’ll just, uh, tell Shelby goodbye and be with you in a minute.”

It was clear to Dan that Pete’s goodbye to Shelby would take more time than Dan could handle. “No, I think you’ve already told her goodbye. Come on.”

Pete looked into Dan’s intense gaze and decided he was right. He leaned over and dropped a quick kiss on Shelby’s swollen lips. Then he crossed the sand to Dan. “Okay.”

“We’ll see you two ladies tomorrow night,” Dan said before they both turned and walked back toward the hotel parking lot.

Shelby crossed to Kay. “Did you and Dan have an argument?”

“If we did, I didn’t know about it. Dan suddenly decided he couldn’t be here any longer, but I have no idea why.”

“Do you think we’re still invited for tomorrow night?”

“He just said so, but we’ll call tomorrow after he leaves for work and speak to Betty. I don’t think I want to discuss anything with Dan right now.”

“Okay. I guess we’ll have an early evening after all.”

They headed back to their hotel room. Then Kay paused to look at the dark sky. “Do you think it looks like rain?”

“What was that all about?” Pete demanded. “I didn’t think you minded if I, uh, dated Shelby.”

“I don’t if Shelby doesn’t,” Dan growled.

“Then if it wasn’t me kissing Shelby, what’s wrong?”

“It was me kissing Kay,” Dan snapped.

Pete stared at his friend and mentor, his mouth open.

“Close your mouth before a fly gets in.”

“But I didn’t know—That is, do you—Damn it, Dan, you
